Hoover Family Carries Forward Sustainable Legacy and Recognized for Environmental Excellence by USPOULTRY

Oak Ridge Farms in Versailles, Mo., was one of five farms across the U.S. to receive the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association’s (USPOULTRY) Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award during the 2026 International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta. USPOULTRY sponsors the annual awards to recognize exemplary environmental stewardship by family farmers engaged in poultry and egg production.

Applicants were rated in several categories: nutrient management planning, implementation of novel sustainability practices, community involvement, innovative litter or manure management techniques and participation in education or outreach programs. A team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies and state poultry associations reviewed applications and conducted farm visits.

Sammy and Lorraine Hoover, owners of Oak Ridge Farm, were recognized following their nomination from Cargill. The Hoovers are the third generation to operate Oak Ridge Farm, continuing a legacy that began in 1972 when their grandparents migrated from Lancaster, Pa. The operation has grown from 30 acres of row crops into a diversified, family-centered farm rooted in sustainability, faith and innovation.

The Hoovers blend traditional Mennonite values with modern, energy-efficient technology to enhance animal welfare and productivity in turkey production. Updating the 23-year-old barns with more efficient heating stoves has provided the Hoovers with a 20% increase in fuel efficiency, and installing automatic European vent doors has provided better air quality to the birds. The family also prioritizes biodiversity on their land. Planting 65 oak trees around the property, establishing food plots, building brush piles and actively managing a small, stocked pond have created productive wildlife habitats for many species of animals and fish.

While raising five children, the Hoovers remain active in their church, school board and agricultural community. Their long-standing partnership with Cargill Turkey Production reflects a shared commitment to ethical animal care, continuous improvement and the long-term sustainability of Oak Ridge Farm.
