Organic Poultry
According to the Organic Trade Association's 2025 Organic Market Survey, organic dairy and egg sales grew at a notably strong rate of 12.8% to reach $9.6 billion, a $1.1 billion increase from a year ago. Organic egg sales rose significantly at 22.4%, even as prices remain high due to the long-term impact of the Avian Influenza epidemic that began in 2024.
The growth in organic dairy and eggs aligns with the current health and wellness trend that is resonating with shoppers who are looking for high quality, nutrient-dense products even when priced at a premium.
Per the latest Census of Agriculture (2022), conducted every five years, U.S. farms and ranches sold $11.21 billion in certified organic commodities, an increase of $1.275 billion or 12.8% from 2019. There were 17,445 certified organic farms, a 5.18% increase over 2019, which accounted for 4.895 million certified acres, a decrease of 11% from 2019. The top sectors and commodities in 2021 were:

The 2024 Poultry and Egg Industry Economic Impact Study, conducted by John Dunham & Associates and commissioned by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, provides a comprehensive overview of the industry's contributions to the U.S. economy.
Overview of the Poultry and Egg Industry
The study encompasses the entire poultry and egg sector, including chicken, turkey, egg production and related processing industries. This includes:
- Primary Production: Farms that hatch and raise chickens, turkeys and other poultry, as well as those producing eggs for consumption and hatcheries.
- Processing:
- Primary Processing: Slaughtering and butchering of live birds, packaging of primary products (e.g., breasts, thighs, whole birds), rendering of fats and separation of other poultry materials like feathers and offal.
- Secondary Processing: Value-added processing such as manufacturing poultry-based nuggets, sausages, patties and other food products.
- Support Industries: Renderers, hatcheries, integrated feed producers, genetic poultry labs and poultry by-product meal producers.
Economic Contributions
- Total Economic Impact: The industry contributes approximately $663.64 billion to the U.S. economy, accounting for about 2.29% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- Employment:
- Direct Jobs: Approximately 525,442 people are employed in production, sales, primary processing, packaging, direct distribution and value-added processing.
- Supplier Jobs: The industry supports around 854,093 jobs in supplier firms that provide goods and services such as coops, barns, fuel, packaging materials, machinery, personnel services, financial services, advertising, consulting and transportation.
- Induced Jobs: Spending by employees in the industry and its suppliers generates an additional 633,025 jobs in the broader economy.
- Economic Output:
- Direct Output: Approximately $247.48 billion.
- Supplier Output: Around $282.35 billion.
- Induced Output: An estimated $133.82 billion, resulting from the multiplier effect of employee spending in the economy.
Tax Contributions
The poultry and egg industry contributes significantly to public finances through various taxes:
- Total Tax Revenue: Approximately $54.05 billion in revenues to federal, state, and local governments. This includes direct taxes paid by firms and their employees, as well as sales taxes, restaurant taxes, and other taxes paid by consumers.
This study highlights the substantial role the poultry and egg industry plays in the U.S. economy, not only through direct production and processing but also via its extensive supply chain and the broader economic activities it stimulates.
